Great netbook

I've had this netbook for almost a month. I love it. I did a lot of comparing and reading comments here on Amazon and I'm so glad I picked this one. It's very light, works very well with the Intant Watch Netflix (this was one of my concerns) and the battery life is great.

good computer, windows 7 starter should list what they stripped like the ability to personalize th desktop wall paper and other basic but nice features to have. stick to xp on netbooks or upgrade windows 7

In college? On a strict budget? Read this.

If you are a poor college student like me, this laptop's price is the BEST out there right now! Here are couple other things you may be wondering about: >Memory is sufficient for what you need. >Streaming is okay, and the video card is decent (for the picky techie student, it could be a whole lot better). >The aspect ratio of the screen is okay for any movie. Widescreen fills up the entire laptop. >Extremely portable. I bring this thing everywhere. >8 hour battery? Maybe in sleep mode. It does give you about 6.5 strong though. >Sound quality is not so hot on its own, so you'll probably want to have speakers if you don't have them already. >Be warned! There isn't a CD drive. I had to buy an external one. >Windows 7 Starter. That means you can't change your background. You'll have to buy Premium. >Microsoft Windows 2007 trial. I downloaded Open Office to get me through the day. >McAfee trial that lasts two months. Hope this helps in your decision to buy!

Great buy!

I was mainly looking for a "laptop" that was light with a great battery life and I found it. The battery on this netwbook is great. It is also fast in terms of booting it up, browsing the web, etc. I reccomend using firefox or google chrome. The only bad thing about this laptop is Windows 7 starter.

The perfect netbook for travel

I was looking for the best netbook for traveling. I am leaving for a 3.5 months trekking trip in South America, and wanted a netbook I could use to : - backup my pictures and movies from my digital camera and camcorder - read my emails from time to time - skype with my friends and family - optionally watch a movie during a long bus/plane trip, or listen to some music at night This means a good hard drive (160 Go is low, 250 Go is the standard nowadays), good battery life (prefer an Intel N450 cpu to the older N270, the N450 is really more power efficient), a SDHC card reader and the usual skype tools (mic, webcam, etc.). Moreover, as I will be carrying all my stuff in a backpack (I really recommend the Deuter Aircontact 55+10 Backpack - 3350cu in btw), I needed a netbook that is light (around 1kg) and compact. Finally, being what we can call a geek, I like to type with my 10 fingers and thus wanted a keyboard as big and comfortable as possible. I tried to type on some other netbooks, like the MSI Wind, and found that very frustrating, because some keys are half the size they should be and I always end up hitting them by mistake. The Toshiba NB305-410 is the closest I found to this ideal netbook. I has all the newest (and now standard) features (Intel N450 cpu, 250 Go hard drive, wifi N, LED screen), a fairly big keyboard (that feels pretty similar to the keyboard of my Apple Macbook Unibody, a bit smaller of course) and a 6-cell battery, which means an incredible 10+ hours battery life. Moreover, the way they made the battery thicker instead of longer is great, because it does not make the netbook longer and thus takes less room. Finally, with 2.6 pounds, it is pretty close to my 1kg target. Some other netbooks are lighter than this one, of course, but this is usually because they only have a 3-cell battery, which means half the battery life. The main disadvantages IMHO is not the hardware, but the software. It comes with Windows 7 Starter, which is kind of a joke (not allowing to change the wallpaper ? Come on....). It also has quite a lot of small utility softwares installed, that you may want to remove if you are an experienced user. I am hesitating to downgrade it to XP, or even try Ubuntu, but for now I think I'm going to give it a chance. Finally, 1 Go of RAM is the strict minimum, considering Windows 7. If you have 45$ to spare, you may want to upgrade to 2 Go : Crucial Technology CT25664AC800 2GB 200-pin SODIMM DDR2 PC2-6400 Memory Module.

It's Slow and Locks up all the Time

I gave it a 3 Star and not a 1 Star, because the Netbook does look nice, and the keyboard is very user friendly. Here are the negatives, and they are big negatives. The Netbook was painfully slow, and locks up all the time. Even when you end task, the end task feature won't work, and you have to shut off the computer. I thought, no problem, I'll just double the RAM like so many have done. I did that to 2 GIG instead of 1 GIG, and it's just as bad as it was. Did I just get a lemon? Am I allowed to return it for a new one, being that I switched out the RAM? I'm VERY bummed that this is my new Netbook, and it takes forever to do anything with it. It's horrible!

Living the Netbook Life

I've owned this netbook for a couple weeks now. I've reviewed the machinery before, and agree with people who have said the following: - I'm an excellent touch-typist, and I love the keyboard; - I love the battery life, keep it charged at home, take it with me everywhere, leaving the cord home, as I just don't need it; - I'm fine with the touchpad, but treated myself to a Logitech cordless mouse with forward and back browsing buttons (Logitech improved this A LOT over my home cordless mouse, in that the USB insert hardly sticks out at all so it's easy to leave in all the time); - screen resolution seems just fine to me; - I gave in to the "fast side" and put a 2G ram upgrade. Did I NEED it? No, just wanted it! Things seemed to run fine on the included 1G of ram; - I've done fine with Vista on my laptop, and I don't see anything wrong with Windows 7 Starter edition. It was apparently built for this kind of application, doesn't draw much power, seems quite responsive to me, so...? - finally, if you're worried about fingerprints - get a life! Sheesh! ANYWAY... What I'm thrilled with is the ease of taking this thing ANYWHERE. I brought work here with me to the book store - a new, favorite habit of mine. I buy coffee, relax, hook into the free WiFi, and work. Life is good! I take this to my friend's house, and work if she's busy, again linking to her wireless network. I even prop this on my lap when I'm watching TV in bed and write or surf. So, what I'm commenting on is the LIFESTYLE change this netbook has made for me. So, mechanically it is wonderful and easy to put into my briefcase or book bag and work or play wherever or whenever I want! What a pleasure! GO FOR IT!

Screen problem ! Toshiba customer service can't answer

I just bought the NB305-N410BL when I power it. after it goes to the TOSHIBA screen it goes black and a Multi-Colored line shows up and sits there for about 20seconds. (its horizontal, and shows about half an inch from the top of the screen). I contacted Amazon and returned the the product and got a replacement but after I received the second one, the problem still exists. I am not sure if whoever has it has the same problem. Have you guys pay attention when the computer is booting. Please click on this link to see what I mean [...]. This person has the same problem as I have so I quote her comment on this product to warn all buyers.

battery

I rate this 2 stars mainly due to battery life can not get more than 7 hrs.20 mins. I bought this one because it said up 11 hours battery life. Does not matter which mode it is in that is the best it will do.Purchased it about 2 mos. ago.For that reason could not recommend buying it.Don't know if I just happened to get a lemon but mine will not even get close to 11 hours.

First impressions after 24 hours....Eee 1005PE

Overall it's a nice little computer. I've had small Toshibas and Fujitsus before and this is the ideal travel size. When I first started it up, it said it was initializing for so long that I thought something was hung up. I went online to research the problem and when I came back it had opened Windows. I am still trying to figure out how to put my own desktop background on it, there are posts from people who have done that. As far as it being a fingerprint magnet, that really doesn't both me so much, but I would recommend that Asus take the person who designed that out back and give them a good spanking! Matte would be so much easier to deal with. I purchased this from Amazon and while some buyers of Asus netbooks say they received a protective sleeve and a cloth to keep the little unit shiny, my box contained neither. Jury is still out on battery life. I have a Blackberry so I bought the Tether software, installed it on the Asus and the BB and was able to surf the web on the Asus using my Blackberry...now that is cool.

Great netbook. Crucial memory upgrade works for my needs.

This is my second netbook. The first was the Msi wind so for me to give up that awesome 2nd generation net-book took quite a bit. The asus build quality is just great, no flex or creaking. The keyboard is a dream to type on. But this is just a repeat of most other positive reviews. So ill get to the point of this review. The Crucial memory upgrade, I purchased the Crucial 800mhz module for the 2 gb upgrade. It works great, however when on power saving mode it won't fully shut down. I have tested this with the original 1 gig of memory and found that on occasion the PC wouldn't shut down properly with that memory either. I think its a super hybrid engine problem, not a memory problem. On high performance and super performance it shuts down just fine. That's fine in my case because i don't use the power saving anyhow. It's too laggy. Even on high performance the battery still lasts more than 10 hours so I'm good to go. I am running the newest bios 0901 and still the shutdown problem persists for those looking to squeak out as much life as possible from their battery. Otherwise the performance is much improved with 2 gigs of memory. There is room to cache now. With 1 gig it took firefox about 12 seconds to start up. Now that windows superfetch has some room to breath it starts in under 3 seconds. Video performance has improved as well. So in conclusion, do the upgrade its worth it. I'm sure Asus will upgrade the bios eventually to make shutdowns perfect in all settings. Ill update as new bios versions are released. Update. I didn't think originally that i would care for windows 7 starter. It's a little bland looking and the windows animation is not as smooth. Plus aero peek doesn't show the page just a link to it. But after using it for a week or so i decided not to upgrade it, because the upgrade to home premium might make it look better but the added functionality is not really worth 79 dollars. I can play dvds on mine with vlc, heck after installing vlc and ac3 decoder i can watch dvds with windows media player. Media center was not necessary either i can watch my recorded tv shows from my desktop computer on media player with no problems right over the network. And as for homegroup simplified networking, I never found a use for it anyway. I guess im just a user level security kind of guy. Just a note, asus has a utility to change the background. Just do a little hunting and you'll find it in no time. So in conclusion give starter a chance, it works just fine.

Awesome Battery

We bought this for its battery life. My wife uses it for college assignments and note taking she can use it all day on a single charge and still have plenty left over when she gets home. Its a great netbook very light and after we added another 1GB of ram its very responsive.

My brother is looking for a laptop right now. And I told him what I'm going to tell you. This computer is a steal. Everything about my big, bulky, 7-pound, 2 hours of battery life, Gateway laptop that bothers me is resolved in this nice, neat package. Here are the pros: * Fantastic "chiclet" keyboard (very responsive, great size) * Very light (hardly notice the difference having it in my backpack) * PHENOMENAL battery life (more than I ever need for a given day) * Fast processor, very responsive to Windows 7 operating system * All applications run smoothly (including Microsoft Office 2007 Ultimate) The only thing that has bothered me so far is that it doesn't have a built-in CD drive. Opting to download newly purchased software is one way around this. Otherwise a $60 external drive will solve this problem as well. My teachers and classmates keep asking me about this computer, and I tell them all the same thing. This is by far the best purchase I have made in a long time. I use it as my mobile machine and keep my files synced to my home machine using ZumoDrive. If I could go back and buy it again, I would do it in a heartbeat.

I really like my new laptop! The only thing that I have conflict is the resolution wont go to 724 that I needed to downloand and view some programs. Otherwise its small and great for travel. I love the internal wireless too.

Compact but amazing.

I'm a first year college student and I was looking for a small laptop that had enough memory to save all my course notes onto without needing an external drive. I own a very large but wonderful 17" HP laptop but it was a hassle to bring to class and in my lecture halls there is rarely enough room to sit comfortably with such a large computer. So I went on a very long and tedious search that finally led me to this computer. At first I was a bit weary seeing as how it is so much smaller compared to my other computer but I found the transition relatively painless. The keyboard is almost full size and the only problem I've been having is pressing the s instead of the a. The screen is really perfect and although the web cam features and speakers are a little lacking I couldn't be happier with my laptop. I'm definitely going to recommend this product to my friends who are having similar problems.

Upgraded my NB205 from Windows 7 Starter(lame windows 7 version) to Windows 7 Ultimate with 2gb Crucial memory and it works well, faster and powerful.

Good little machine. Very pleased with it. Not so thrilled about the Windows 7 it came with; it's very neat in some ways and I suppose I'll get used to it.

Hard drive problems

I got one of these to take on a trip, during which the machine limped along with a specific problem -- after a random amount of time running, anywhere from 30 seconds to about an hour, it would freeze and reboot. This would always happen with the hard drive light stuck on, making me think the problem was with the hard drive. When I got back, I returned it to Amazon for a replacement. That came quickly and at first seemed fine. Great in fact. I liked the keyboard, I like Windows 7, the machine feels pretty nippy. It wakes up very quickly and is really small and lightweight. Then after two days it too developed a hard drive problem. This time it wouldn't boot at all. I returned it to Amazon for a full refund. Amazon's processing of returns was great. In my experience, the unreliable hard drives Toshiba uses sabotage this otherwise excellent product. One more gripe, though this isn't specific to the Toshiba Mini - Windows 7 starter edition, which is the operating system that comes with this laptop, doesn't let you set your own desktop background. The desktop you get has a big Microsoft Windows logo. The software is intentionally nobbled so you can't change it. I find that pretty offensive.

Good hardware, bad OS

It looks like very neat piece of hardware. But Windows Starter edition is a big disappointment. If you planing to run more then 3 applications at once or even change desktop background to anything then default wavy blue, stay away from products with Windows Starter edition. It appears to me that originally Toshiba was supplying this product with Home edition (it's a lot of referrals all across user's manual to non-available OS features), but later on decided to save some money by switching to Starter edition.

I just bought this product so I can't say too much but it's been working great for me so far..boots up in good timing, watching videos are a breeze,the resolution is good, for the battery life could be a little longer but pretty ok

netbook mini 10 by dell

Great little product, T.V. tuner works pretty fair (as to be expected given its size and power). Don't go in expecting full on entertainment super center, but in a pinch somewhere or just bored and want to watch local shows, or the news, it works good. Keyboard on the thing is solid and responsive. The touch pad is surprisingly easy to get used to. It doesn't take the place of a desktop, but when you're on the go and don't want to bring everything and the kitchen sink, you can't beat it for the price and performance. Amazon FTW!

Will use this little guy for traveling, which will be easier than taking a full size notebook. It works well, is fast and will do exactly what I want to do with it - keep in touch with family and friends

Dell mini beats HP hands down...

I initially ordered HP mini and was thoroughly disappointed with it. The arrow keys didn't work properly. I did a research and found that Dell Mini 10 has way better features for approximately the same price. I requested for a exchange and Amazon handled it very smoothly. I am so delighted with my Dell mini. The look and feel is awesome and so are the features. I think this is the only laptop in this class which has a HDMI which connects easily to my LCD HDTV. I am yet to use the TV tuner but other reviewers have mentioned that it works nicely. The 6 cell battery pack is very handy considering that I would be travelling a lot with my mini. The keys are nicely laid and the touch pad works fine. All in all, for someone looking for a small sized machines, Dell Mini 10 should be the best choice.

This is my 3rd netbook and it is as fast as the other ones. Its not a laptop. So a little slowness is to be expected. I was worried about the touch pad, but have found no problem with it. It does tend to get a little hot so a cooling pad would probably be a good purchase. I pick up 26 digital channels at home and they show beautifully. I am totally impressed with the digital tv tuner. I am also loving the HDMI. I believe this is the only netbook of this size that has a HDMI. The 6 cell battery sticks out a bit under the computer. It helps raise it up so that it stays cooler. It boots up fairly quickly. I find no faults at all with this computer.
