The perfect netbook for travel

I was looking for the best netbook for traveling. I am leaving for a 3.5 months trekking trip in South America, and wanted a netbook I could use to : - backup my pictures and movies from my digital camera and camcorder - read my emails from time to time - skype with my friends and family - optionally watch a movie during a long bus/plane trip, or listen to some music at night This means a good hard drive (160 Go is low, 250 Go is the standard nowadays), good battery life (prefer an Intel N450 cpu to the older N270, the N450 is really more power efficient), a SDHC card reader and the usual skype tools (mic, webcam, etc.). Moreover, as I will be carrying all my stuff in a backpack (I really recommend the Deuter Aircontact 55+10 Backpack - 3350cu in btw), I needed a netbook that is light (around 1kg) and compact. Finally, being what we can call a geek, I like to type with my 10 fingers and thus wanted a keyboard as big and comfortable as possible. I tried to type on some other netbooks, like the MSI Wind, and found that very frustrating, because some keys are half the size they should be and I always end up hitting them by mistake. The Toshiba NB305-410 is the closest I found to this ideal netbook. I has all the newest (and now standard) features (Intel N450 cpu, 250 Go hard drive, wifi N, LED screen), a fairly big keyboard (that feels pretty similar to the keyboard of my Apple Macbook Unibody, a bit smaller of course) and a 6-cell battery, which means an incredible 10+ hours battery life. Moreover, the way they made the battery thicker instead of longer is great, because it does not make the netbook longer and thus takes less room. Finally, with 2.6 pounds, it is pretty close to my 1kg target. Some other netbooks are lighter than this one, of course, but this is usually because they only have a 3-cell battery, which means half the battery life. The main disadvantages IMHO is not the hardware, but the software. It comes with Windows 7 Starter, which is kind of a joke (not allowing to change the wallpaper ? Come on....). It also has quite a lot of small utility softwares installed, that you may want to remove if you are an experienced user. I am hesitating to downgrade it to XP, or even try Ubuntu, but for now I think I'm going to give it a chance. Finally, 1 Go of RAM is the strict minimum, considering Windows 7. If you have 45$ to spare, you may want to upgrade to 2 Go : Crucial Technology CT25664AC800 2GB 200-pin SODIMM DDR2 PC2-6400 Memory Module.

It's Slow and Locks up all the Time

I gave it a 3 Star and not a 1 Star, because the Netbook does look nice, and the keyboard is very user friendly. Here are the negatives, and they are big negatives. The Netbook was painfully slow, and locks up all the time. Even when you end task, the end task feature won't work, and you have to shut off the computer. I thought, no problem, I'll just double the RAM like so many have done. I did that to 2 GIG instead of 1 GIG, and it's just as bad as it was. Did I just get a lemon? Am I allowed to return it for a new one, being that I switched out the RAM? I'm VERY bummed that this is my new Netbook, and it takes forever to do anything with it. It's horrible!

Living the Netbook Life

I've owned this netbook for a couple weeks now. I've reviewed the machinery before, and agree with people who have said the following: - I'm an excellent touch-typist, and I love the keyboard; - I love the battery life, keep it charged at home, take it with me everywhere, leaving the cord home, as I just don't need it; - I'm fine with the touchpad, but treated myself to a Logitech cordless mouse with forward and back browsing buttons (Logitech improved this A LOT over my home cordless mouse, in that the USB insert hardly sticks out at all so it's easy to leave in all the time); - screen resolution seems just fine to me; - I gave in to the "fast side" and put a 2G ram upgrade. Did I NEED it? No, just wanted it! Things seemed to run fine on the included 1G of ram; - I've done fine with Vista on my laptop, and I don't see anything wrong with Windows 7 Starter edition. It was apparently built for this kind of application, doesn't draw much power, seems quite responsive to me, so...? - finally, if you're worried about fingerprints - get a life! Sheesh! ANYWAY... What I'm thrilled with is the ease of taking this thing ANYWHERE. I brought work here with me to the book store - a new, favorite habit of mine. I buy coffee, relax, hook into the free WiFi, and work. Life is good! I take this to my friend's house, and work if she's busy, again linking to her wireless network. I even prop this on my lap when I'm watching TV in bed and write or surf. So, what I'm commenting on is the LIFESTYLE change this netbook has made for me. So, mechanically it is wonderful and easy to put into my briefcase or book bag and work or play wherever or whenever I want! What a pleasure! GO FOR IT!

Screen problem ! Toshiba customer service can't answer

I just bought the NB305-N410BL when I power it. after it goes to the TOSHIBA screen it goes black and a Multi-Colored line shows up and sits there for about 20seconds. (its horizontal, and shows about half an inch from the top of the screen). I contacted Amazon and returned the the product and got a replacement but after I received the second one, the problem still exists. I am not sure if whoever has it has the same problem. Have you guys pay attention when the computer is booting. Please click on this link to see what I mean [...]. This person has the same problem as I have so I quote her comment on this product to warn all buyers.

battery

I rate this 2 stars mainly due to battery life can not get more than 7 hrs.20 mins. I bought this one because it said up 11 hours battery life. Does not matter which mode it is in that is the best it will do.Purchased it about 2 mos. ago.For that reason could not recommend buying it.Don't know if I just happened to get a lemon but mine will not even get close to 11 hours.
